Morning exercise:
Today I would like you to INVESTIGATE and go outside and find a plant. Touch the dirt around it. Look for the leaves. Pick up some leaves that have fallen off the plants.
In your Math & Science copybooks, write your name and date to the top of the page. We are going to do leaf rubbings. How do you think leaf rubbing works? Think about it for a minute. DISCOVER. Leaf rubbing gives us an image of the leaf on the paper using crayon or pencil. How might we do that? Place one leaf just under the page and start rubbing the paper gently with your coloured pencil or crayon. What happens if you press harder? What happens if you press softer? Continue practicing with different leaves, pressing in different ways.
CONNECT. Look at size and shape of the leaf. How does it feel? How does it smell? Find another leaf. How are they the same? How are they different?
CREATE. Time to do your leaf rubbing. It's okay if they look different or you need to practice before you get the hang of it, this is how we learn.
REFLECT. What do you notice about the shape or lines or curves that you see? What parts do you see? How are leaf rubbings of the leaves the same? How are they different?
Can you make anything out of the shapes of the leaves? Here's an example:
What other materials do you think you could use this rubbing technique with? Try different things and look at how they are the same or different.
